Sophie Hediger, 26, Dies in Fatal Avalanche at Switzerland Resort

Sophie Hediger, a native of Zurich, has tragically passed away following a fatal avalanche on Monday, December 23, according to the Swiss-Ski Federation.

The avalanche occurred at Arosa, a renowned winter resort in Switzerland known for its comprehensive range of winter activities.

Hediger, who represented Switzerland in the 2022 Winter Olympics, quickly rose to prominence as a young star in the sport. She was a member of the snowboard cross team that competed in Beijing and participated in the mixed team snowboarding event.

In the 2023-24 season, Hediger achieved significant milestones in her snowboarding career. She earned podium finishes in two World Cup races, including a second-place finish in January at St. Moritz, solidifying her place in the sport’s history.

Details about the exact cause of her death and other specifics surrounding the accident have not been disclosed out of respect for her family’s privacy.

“We are deeply shocked, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences,” said Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser in a statement. “She lost her life tragically, brutally, and far too soon.”
