Mariah Carey has shared the tragic news that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, both passed away on the same day this past weekend.
"The loss of my mother has left me devastated, and the fact that my sister also passed on the same day has added to the heartbreak," the 55-year-old Grammy-winning artist said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.
Mariah expressed her gratitude for the time she spent with her mother during her final week. "I’m thankful that I had the chance to be with my mom in her last days," she said. "I am deeply appreciative of the love and support everyone has shown and kindly ask for privacy during this unimaginable time."
As of now, no further information has been released regarding the causes of Patricia and Alison's deaths.
Patricia Carey, who was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, had a background as a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal instructor before welcoming her three children, Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The couple divorced when Mariah was just 3 years old.
Mariah’s relationship with her mother was often complicated, even though Patricia was the source of Mariah’s vocal gifts.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah described the complexities of their relationship: "My life with my mother has been full of contradictions and layered emotions. It’s never been just black-and-white — it’s been a spectrum of feelings."
"Our bond is one of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment," Mariah continued in her memoir. "It’s a complicated love that ties my heart to hers."
Despite their ups and downs, Mariah remained connected to her mother. In 2010, they performed a touching mother-daughter duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus" during ABC's Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special.
Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, writing, "To Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe did the best she could. I will love you as best as I can, always."
The singer’s relationship with her sister Alison was equally complex. In the memoir, Mariah revealed that at one point, it felt "emotionally and physically safer" for her to avoid contact with both Alison and their brother, Morgan.
